Great idea and great tutorial. The boards you used look like the board you get in the back of picture frames. A couple of cheap frames in the chosen size would give rectangular boards. I’d attach a ribbon to hold my thread and one for scissors when on the move. A matching zipper pouch to hold everything with a piece of elastic attached to go around the board would be a great addition too. You have definitely got me thinking about this.

I have a Viking sewing machine that quilts from doing French Heirloom sewing by machine on making my daughter's dresses. I learned sooo much from the linen quilt. I just bought my dogs new winter jackets. Im going to line them with linen. And make linen bed covers for their dog beds.
I love Daisy and Grace templates. They can be hand sewn together or by machine. My friend hand sews them, I machine sew mine. This would make a nice gift for my friend. I would sew it slightly different though. I would make the 2" boarder around it nearly three or maybe three inches wide and make a half inch fold then another fold and sew in down close to the edge thus making a casing. Then I would put the elastic through the casing, but that's just me. Love this idea.
I purchased something similar several years ago when I traveled back and forth to my cabin. It's June Taylors Quilter's Cut and Press. I love that thing. It doesn't have any magnets or pockets though
So wonderful. Another idea for the board is the cutting board. Rounded corner handle. Fits the cutting board neat edges and if you don’t make iron too hot should be ok! Thank you loved this!!!!🎉❤
You have given me some ideas on how I can personalize it for myself. I would use a thicker fabric such as upolstery or canvas fabric. Sew a few extra seams on the large outer pocket to create smaller pockets. These would be ideal for a small ruler, pencil or hexagon pieces. i think sewing a very small piece of elastic on to each side larger pocket may make it easier to slide it in and out. I don’t fly well, so I take the train. Since I’m in the Midwest, most of my train rides are very long. I have set myself up with some hand, sewing projects and replacement parts in my luggage, but this little lap sewing station will be perfect. On the trains there are plug into the receipt so I can take my little mini iron or handheld pointy iron for those few occasions I need to do that. I love the magnet idea, and when the cover gets dirty, it’s easily replaced or washed. The handy-dandy pocket will be very convenient. Thank you!❤😊
I didn’t have any signs, but I did have a few of the small wooden cutting boards from $ store so I used one of those. Added a magnet in corner triangle in the corner and little sleeve pocket on other side which holds small cutting boards from perfect. I just made it like a cover and fit it over the cutting board (with batting glued to both sides of board) and hand stitched the bottom closed. Works great.
I love this handy lap table! I wonder if you could attach a snapped cord on which to store your spool of thread without risk of dropping it to roll around the car or airline floor?
@@susanivey8853 I was thinking that too. If you sewed a piece of elastic to your fabric and used a snap on one end it would make your spools or bobbins easy to change.
You could do that with an attached ribbon. 1- Attach one end to pocket inside then thread through spool put decorative pen through end after to hold thread spool. If it falls off or out of pocket ribbon will stop it from falling. Hope this helps.

Be cautious when ironing from the front with thin boards. That heat will warp your green cutting mat on the back. They are very heat sensitive. 2nd…spin off a metal bobbin of your sewing thread, so magnet holds it. Less bulk to carry. Cut a nice rectangle of template plastic with gridding or plain and slide it in as a glue surface. If using the transparent template plastic. You can still see your green mat measurement’s beneath it even if you glue the green mat in place, the template plastic can slip out and be washed dried and slipped right back in. Also gives a nice surface for writing.
So far so good! No problems at all with my first board made out of same fake board. I have ironed on it quite a bit too! Good thing to watch for though✅
@@TheSewingChannel I think it depends on the mat. If high quality self healing from Olaf, Fiskars, Quilter’s Select, it will warp easily. The less expensive $1.25 Dollar store ones are for craft cutting and more rigid material. I am glad it is working well. Fun tutorial.

On the pocket I would add some elastic to the top of one or both sides to tighten it up. This is a great project though. I do EPP when I travel on my RV and this would be a great addition.
I. Love this idea! I had a thought. Make a fitted cover like a pillowcase, with a fold one edge ( like those pillowcases you made) with the padding on one side. The pockets could be sewed in also. Then you could tuck extra fabric or patterns, or English piecing papers inside? 🤔
You mean, instead of the elastic? Just make a padded slip cover? I suppose you cd sew on little corners to hold the cutting board in place. Or short pieces of elastic. 🌷
I’ve been thinking about your idea. One thing to consider with the fold over flap on a pillowcase is that pillows are soft and you can scrunch them to get them into a pocket pillowcase, whereas hardboard doesn’t bend. So you might hv to make a workaround for the flap. Maybe make it fold over on the outside of the board, with some kind of fastener, like velcro or snaps.
That’s pretty nifty, Tracy! TFS. When hand stitching, I’m always losing my needle 🪡 (worry that I’m going to end up sitting on it!) 😅 The scissors are always falling off my lap, thread rolling away, etc. This looks like it wd be a big help. 🌷😀
Glad to know I’m not the only one with that problem. Those needles get lost a lot. So I keep a magnetic thing with me to find them. The telescoping kind.

I love this. I have a long flight from England to Florida in February and would like to take some of my crafting and hand sewing stuff with me. Are we allowed to take needles and small scissors and circular knitting needles on the plane now or do I need to put everything in the hold?
This is a great idea! I think I would have squared off the end that isn’t rounded. That stuff is pretty easy to cut with a razor knife! Just my opinion.

Great questions Wanda. Mostly I needed the mat there because I will be "glue basting" my little rectangles on it. So it will be cleanable. I only need a small space for glueing on the go. If you are going to utilize for cutting then you prob shouldn't tack the pocket on. Thank you for supporting my small channel❤️

Maybe you could pull the first one around and glue it down... As in the ironing one, with the magnet in there loose, then glue the cutting board on the back. You can remove a glued down one to replace it if it needs that. You could remove the pocket and use the whole board for cutting then? Make your elasic one as a cover to keep everything safe when you put it away, you won't be home to find it all later, if it comes off I put my epp paper pieces in a zip lock, they don't tend to stick to fabric uncovered sew a loop on your pocket near the top, to hold a cotton reel ribbon onto, loop it on. Pop it and the scissors into the pocket for safety. Can you add a thread net to stop it unravelling? That curve at the base may be just the thing to hold the board away from your stomach as you use it. Looking good. You may want to check with the airline, they took scissors and knitting needles etc away for safety a while ago.
For that slow-sew you're doing, you could cut a piece of card stock the exact size of each brick and tuck it in the pocket of the lap board. That way, you wouldn't have to use the cutting mat to check if the size is accurate.
My question is why not make it book style? You can use it open or fold over use one side or the other, and when closed, everything is inside closed away. You can also out hadles on it for carring. You cooild put the cutting mat on one side ironing board the other you gave 4 surface even go so far as put a page like sheet in the middle that can be stretched over the front or back cover to give you an 2 additional work surfaces so many possibilities

Regarding the Retreat next year. That's not far from my house actually - about an hour by car! I am Gluten-Free plus Plant-Based and no/limited Oil, Sugar and Salt. Can you accommodate that option? If not, can I bring my own food? Still deciding if I am available, as my family wants to do a Family Vacation end of April or first of May.
I bought thin wood and a cutting mat on Temu. I glued the cutting mat to the board on one side, and the Ironing batting on the side. I also added heavy duty aluminum foil under the ironing side of the board before the ironing batting. Extra protection. You could also put a few layers of heavy duty foil under your ironing batting. So, glued the cutting mat on one side of the board then glued the ironing batting to the other side of the aluminum foil covered board. You can make any size you like board.
Not expensive. Or Home Depot has cut wood pieces sometimes, and just get a piece cut by them to the size of your mat being used. Ironing safe type batting and fabric and you have all your items needed to make this.

I’m wondering why you glued the cutting mat down with the pocket covering it. Why not just leave it loose then slip in and out of pocket. I made a similar item that folded like a book..the outside was padded, fabric glued around to back the affine sandpaper sheet glued on one side of the inside and cutting mat on other. It could be opened up to have full sized ironing surface. Works wonderfully.
This is so you don’t have any extra shifting or moving parts you have to keep track of. I’m one of those people one more stitch & just one more But I do like your idea too.
Don’t be surprised if security says “no” to your scissors and magnets- they kept my 3 crochet hooks, fortunately I had 1 bamboo hook in my purse. Just saying-
I take them everytime I fly ✅ 4" craft scissors or less are allowed in the cabin of the plane. I've been flying with scissors for at least 20 plus years...my bag goes through the scanner and not one time has anyone said anything...I even have them out while sewing/knitting on the plane. They are a TSA approved item✅
@@brigahIllNyes, foreign airlines have different rules. I was researching for my friend, and part of her flight was going to be w Japan airlines, and the scissors were not allowed. I’d say, make sure they are inexpensive just in case. Or get one of those necklaces with the hidden blade for snipping your threads.
What a great idea and a fun project. I can see a wood board request for my handy husband so I can make it a custom shape and size. I like someone’s suggestion about making it fold together so I have a couple of sides to customize. Maybe one size would have a bigger green board. This was inspiring!

This is a great idea. I was thinking of using two cheap clip boards glued together. Just remove the clips. No worries about a weird shape.

I bought thin wood and a cutting mat on Temu. I glued the cutting mat to the board on one side, and the Ironing batting on the side. I also added heavy duty aluminum foil under the ironing side of the board before the ironing batting. Extra protection. You could also put a few layers of heavy duty foil under your ironing batting.
So, glued the cutting mat on one side of the board then glued the ironing batting to the other side of the aluminum foil covered board.
You can make any size you like board.
Not expensive. Or Home Depot has cut wood pieces sometimes, and just get a piece cut by them to the size of your mat being used. Ironing safe type batting and fabric and you have all your items needed to make this.

To hold the boards together you could use heat and bond on both pieces and heat them together with a hot dry iron … no mess

Cool project! LAX has a bad habit of taking scissors and jewelry pliers away from me even though they comply with TSA regulations.

Use a small pair of the fold up kind, silver embroidered kind. Then tuck them in pocket after each use. Hope this helps.

I’m wondering why you glued the cutting mat down with the pocket covering it. Why not just leave it loose then slip in and out of pocket. I made a similar item that folded like a book..the outside was padded, fabric glued around to back the affine sandpaper sheet glued on one side of the inside and cutting mat on other. It could be opened up to have full sized ironing surface. Works wonderfully.
This is so you don’t have any extra shifting or moving parts you have to keep track of.

The point of the elastic is to wash the basic ? I have made lap working station and glue fabric .
Is there a reason you didn't glue instead of elastic?
You could have added some elastic at the top of the pocket that slides on

I take them everytime I fly ✅ 4" craft scissors or less are allowed in the cabin of the plane. I've been flying with scissors for at least 20 plus years...my bag goes through the scanner and not one time has anyone said anything...I even have them out while sewing/knitting on the plane. They are a TSA approved item✅
Unfortunately, I've had them confiscated...mind you, this was in Europe, so maybe regulations differ?😢@@TheSewingChannel
@@brigahIllNyes, foreign airlines have different rules. I was researching for my friend, and part of her flight was going to be w Japan airlines, and the scissors were not allowed. I’d say, make sure they are inexpensive just in case. Or get one of those necklaces with the hidden blade for snipping your threads.
What a great idea and a fun project. I can see a wood board request for my handy husband so I can make it a custom shape and size. I like someone’s suggestion about making it fold together so I have a couple of sides to customize. Maybe one size would have a bigger green board. This was inspiring!
